A multi-record performer in the swimming pool, Tom Platt was a four-year letter winner for the Hiram swimming & diving program.

One of the leaders of the swimming program in the late 60s, Platt was a three-time Captain for the Terriers and was named team MVP in each of those three seasons.

A six-time Hiram record holder, Platt made his mark in both the backstroke and the individual medley. Platt held the 100 yard backstroke record for 20 years, until it was broken 2007 Hall of Fame inductee Kevin Mannes.

Additionally, Platt held the 200 yard backstroke record, as well as the 160 and 200 yard individual medley records. He also was a member of a quad that held both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relay records.

Following graduation, Platt went on to achieve his Master's degree from Bowling Green State University and his Ph. D. from The University of Alberta in 1978. He then served as a full-time faculty member in higher education; first at the University of Richmond (1978-85) and then at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, before he retired from being a full-time professor in 2015.
