Swartz starred for the Hiram basketball team for two years and baseball team for one. Swartz earned All-President's Athletic Conference First Team honors in 1983-84 and 1984-85. He helped lead the Terriers to the 1983-84 PAC championship and was named the conference's most valuable player. He also earned NCAA Division III Mideast Regional All-Tournament Team honors that same season.
The team’s leading scorer in his first two seasons as a Terrier, Russ averaged a career high 20.0 points per game as a sophomore, and scored over 900 career points. An accurate shooter, he still ranks among the top ten all-time in the Hiram record book for field goal percentage. A two-time Team Captain and MVP, Swartz was was also an outstanding performer on the Hiram baseball team.
At this time of his induction, Swartz was the athletic director and head boy's basketball coach at Norton High School. He previously served as the head boy's basketball coach at Southeast Local Schools (1988-1994) and was a graduate assistant at the University of Akron from 1986 to 1988. His overall record as a high school head coach is 120-96, including three sectional and two league championships.
