William H. Hollinger Hall of Fame
Alford is recognized as one of Hiram College's top athletes. in football, basketball, and track. His size played an important role in his participation. He combined strength and agility as a shot putter and discus thrower on the track team; was an outstanding offensive and defensive lineman on the gridiron; and played well underneath the basket on the court. He also had the privilege of playing in the 50 year anniversary game of lhe first intercollegiate basketball contest in Ohio, which was between Hiram and Mount Union.
A three year stint in the Navy took him away from Hiram before he returned in 1948 to complete his degree. A member of Phi Gamma Epsilon, he. was also a student affiliate to the American Chemical Society and proctor at Gray Hall.Â
His chemistry background was applied as an employee of the Standard Oil Company for 36 years, retiring' as Senior Research Associate. During that time he earned a master's degree in chemistry and with more than 30 U.S. Patents and six technical papers to his credit, is now a member of the Sohio Inventors Hall of Fame.
Involvement in church and community has included membership on the Board of Administrators and Chairman of the Council on Ministries for
the Old Stone United Methodist Church and membership on the Board of the Amherst Community Chest.
