Smith led the receiving corps of the 1952 Terrier football team with 24 receptions for 430 yards and a then-school record five touchdowns in a single season. He also caught three touchdown passes in a win over Bethany, a feat that wasn't equaled by another Terrier football player till 1986. He also performed well as a guard for the Hiram basketball team, and an infielder for the baseball team.
In addition to his exploits on the athletic fields, Smith was a member of Kappa Sigma Pi, the H-Club and served as an assistant football coach for two years before graduating as a member of the Class of 1954.
He worked as a physical education director at various middle and high schools before assuming his then-present position as of his induction as Physical Education Director at Inverness Middle School in Florida.
