John Burr was a four-year member of the football team as a student-athlete at Hiram. He is a 1983 graduate of the College and was a four-year letter winner as a defensive lineman.
During his playing career, Burr earned second-team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference honors as a junior. In his final season, he was first team All- PAC and was tabbed as an honorable mention Associated Press All-American. Burr was a key member of the 1982 conference champion team on which he also served as team co-captain. That season, the Terriers posted a 6-3 overall mark and a 6-1 record in the PAC to win Hiram’s first conference championship in football. The previous season, Hiram had finished a strong second in the PAC with a 5-2 record and an overall mark of 6-3.
Burr was known both for his quickness and strength, and former coach Joe Malmisur credits Burr’s play at the nose guard position with sometimes occupying two and three opposing blockers, allowing the linebackers to make unimpeded tackles.
An outstanding student in the sciences, Burr earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at The Ohio State University. As of his induction, Burr served as a principle scientist with Proctor and Gamble. He has also held positions as manager of veterinary services and animal welfare with The Iams Company (1989-99) and associate veterinarian at the Sinclair Veterinary Clinic. Burr also served his alma mater as a member of the President’s Council on Science Initiatives and contributed to the building of Gerstacker Science Hall.
As of his induction, Burr resided in Brookville, Ohio.
