McCarty graduated from Hiram in 1970 after earning four varsity letters in football and both indoor and outdoor track. He totaled 12 varsity letters in his career, including four alone his freshman year. He was a member of the football team, both track teams, and also wrestled that season, finishing
fourth in the Ohio Athletic Conference championships. He was a two-time All-OAC second team selection in football and also set a conference record with 32 tackles in a game against Kenyon in 1968. He also set the school shot put record in track and field in 1970. In his career, McCarty started every football game and competed in every track and field meet that Hiram participated in from 1967 to 1970.
In 1970, McCarty was selected in the tenth round of the National football League draft by the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the first Terrier football player to be drafted.
After graduating from Hiram, McCarty earned Master's of Arts degrees from Kent State University (Finance) and John Carroll University (Economics) and went on to earn his Ph.Din Economics from Purdue University in 1994. As of his induction, McCarty taught AP-level micro- and macro-economics at Solon Sigh School.
In addition, McCarty, as of his induction, was an official for both high school and college swimming & diving, is a national committee member for the AP Economics Test Grading Committee, and has written or contributed to six economics textbooks and workbooks.
