Swartz was named a First-Team NCAA Division III All-American in both 1986 and 1987, and was also the PAC Player of the Year in each of those seasons. He was a four-time First-Team All-PAC selection and helped lead Hiram to the 1984 PAC Championship. He holds the all-time Hiram and PAC record for career points with 2,252, and was the overall NCAA Division III scoring leader his senior year in 1987, averaging 29.4 points per game. He still ranks among the top 30 all-time Division III players in both total career points and average points per game.

Swartz was also a three-time All-PAC performer on the Hiram baseball team. Upon graduation, he held 12 school records, and continues to this day to be the all-time leader by a wide margin in most of the scoring categories. A three-time Team Captain and MVP, Rod was twice selected as the winner of the Campbell Award given to Hiram’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
