Ellis, a 1981 graduate of Hiram, was a four-time All-President's Athletic Conference selection for the Terriers' men's basketball team. He was named Second-Team All-PAC twice and was also a two-time Honorable Mention selection. Ellis finished his career with 1,197 points, a total which presently ranks 12th all-time in school history.
After graduating from Hiram, Ellis was an assistant basketball coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and at Allegheny (Pa.) College in Meadville, Pa. He returned to Hiram in 1989 as the head men's basketball coach. Ellis guided the Terrier program program for three seasons.
As of his induction, Ellis taught and coached boy's basketball at Geneva High School. His coaching honors include being as selected as the North Eastern Conference (NEC) Coach of the Year, Ashtabula County Coach of the Year, and the News Herald Coach of the Year, at various points in his career. He has also been listed among Who's' Who of America's teachers.
