Malmisur ranks as the winningest coach in Hiram football history, posting 51 wins during his 14 seasons at the helm. In 1982, Malmisur's final season, the team won the President's Athletic Conference championship, the only football title in the school's history.

Malmisur was named Executive Director of Athletics at YSU in 1983 and held the post until retiring in 1994. During that time the YSU athletic program reach new levels, including four NCAA Division I-AA national football championship appearances and the progression of the men's and women's basketball programs at the Division I level.

Malmisur is a 1947 graduate of Youngstown East High School and earned nine varsity letters playing football, basketball, and baseball at Heidelberg College, where he graduated in 1951. He began his coaching career at Wellston and Lima high schools before returning to his alma mater to guide the Heidelberg football program. He became the head coach at Hiram in 1969 and remained their until coming to YSU, guiding the Terriers to five wining seasons over his tenure.

Malmisur has been involved as a coach or administrator in athletics for over 50 years and, at the time of his induction, served on the YSU Penguin Club financial support system. He also previously served as director of that organization. He is a past President of the Football Coaches Association of both the Ohio Athletic Conference and the President's athletic Conference, was the District IV representative to the American Football Coaches Association and served on the NCAA Division I-AA Central Region's voting committee.

A charter member of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the National football Foundation Hall of Fame, Malmisur was named the 1990 Mahoning Valley Sportsman of the Year by the Mahoning valley Coaches Association and was inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991.
