Montes, a linebacker for the Terriers' football team from 1981-1984, received All-PAC honors four times. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Youngstown, Ohio, he was selected as the conference's Defensive Most Valuable Player as a sophomore when he helped lead Hiram to its only conference championship in football. He was also a four-time All-PAC selection, two-time PAC Defensive Player of the Year and received All-American recognition following his sophomore and senior seasons. He holds the school record for career tackles (521) and tackles per game (14.9). His career highlights include a quarterback sack late in the fourth quarter versus Carnegie-Mellon University that preserved Hiram's 21-19 victory in 1982. As a freshman, he intercepted a pass versus Thiel College which set up the game-winning field goal in the Terriers' 17-14 victory.
Montes earned his Ph.D. from the University of Akron in 1998. As of his induction, he resides in Naples, Florida where he is the general manager and chief psychologist for Trinity Counseling.
