While working toward a Physical Education major at Hiram, Bruce played a little basketball. For four years, Bruce played the kind of basketball that lead him to participate in three PAC championships and three NCAA National Championship Tournament bids.
Gabriel was a two-time All-PAC honoree, garnering First-Team honors in 1975, as well as PAC Player of the Year honors that same season. A consistent scorer through out his four seasons playing for the Terriers, Bruce finished with 1,007 career points and helped lead his team to three consecutive PAC Championships in 1972, 1973, and 1974, and a runner-up finish in 1975. Hiram’s conference record during that four year stretch was an outstanding 49-5. Selected as the Team MVP in 1975 and a two-time Team Captain, Gabriel was the winner of the Campbell Award given to Hiram’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 1975.
Bruce also played a little golf, rose to team MVP in 1974 and 1975 and also made the first team during the Mt. Union Tournament. Outside his varsity athletic activities, Bruce also participated in the Phi Gamma Epsilon social club and served as the assistant and head intramural director in 1974 and 1975, respectively.
As of his induction, Bruce served his hometown of Kirtland, Ohio, as teacher, coach, and athletic director for the Kirtland Public Schools. While Bruce still pursues his interest in basketball and golf, his greatest thrill is watching and supporting his children and their activities.
