Gruber's impact on the baseball program at Hiram was remarkable, not only in the 80s but today. Gruber was a two-time First-Team All-PAC honoree and was selected as the PAC Most Valuable Player in 1982, pitching Hiram to a 10-2 conference record his senior year. During his four-year career, the Terriers were a solid 33-13 in conference competition, and finished in second place in three of those seasons.
Tireless on the mound, and sometimes pitching both games of a double-header, Doug ranks first in the Hiram record book in career wins with 21, in career innings pitched with 235, and in career strikeouts with 257. During his MVP Award winning season in 1982, he was an outstanding 8-3, with 78 innings pitched, 106 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.87. He was also selected to the Division III All-Region Team that season.
Gruber received the Campbell Award in 1982 as Hiram’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
A math and economics major while at Hiram, Doug was a member of the Econ-Management Club, belonged to the H-club and served as director of Hiram's intramural sports program. Upon graduation, he earned an MBA from Michigan State University. Doug's background paid off. As of his induction, Gruber was the Financial Director for General Motors Corporation, a position that has taken him to France and China.
