Johnston is in his 36th year as the head athletic trainer at Hiram College, with 25 of those years also including his role as the Assistant Athletic Director. He also serves as the Director of the Academic program – which involves prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for student-athletes in intercollegiate and intramural programs – and the Athletics HealthCare Administrator. He is one of the athletic trainer liaisons for the NCAC, representing the conference at the athletic trainers annual meeting.

Johnston began teaching at Hiram in 1989, serving as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Integrative Exercise Science (IES), which involves advising, counseling and instructing students pursuing an IES major. He previously was part of the college’s IES major committee and played a key role in the research, development and implementation of the IES major.

When he’s not on campus, Johnston enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, sailing and camping with family and friends. He spent nearly two decades with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a scoutmaster and vigil member of the Order of the Arrow.

Johnston says that every year at Hiram College is a bounty of memorable experiences.

“The opportunity to see our athletes compete in all of the sports over three-and-a-half decades has provided a multitude of memorable wins, plays and exemplary performances that are far too many to describe,” Johnston said.
