In basketball, he played for Coach Herb Mathews and was a ball-handling guard. He helped lead the team to back-to back winning seasons in his junior and senior year. In track, he was a sprinter and a member of the relay teams.
He graduated in 1932 with a degree in chemistry and was among the first ten African-American men to graduate from Hiram. His other activities on campus included serving on the staffs of the school newspaper, the Advance, and the yearbook, the Spider Web. He was a class officer, participated on the Debate Team, and was a member of the men’s choir.
After graduation, George worked in social services in the city of New York, where he and his wife, Luverta, raised their son, Edward. George died on January 27, 1971 and is buried in Long Island National Cemetery.
