Boyer gave true meaning to the the current football term "coffin corner" as his accuracy, in addition to a strong leg, made him one of the top punters in the history of the school. His talents were recognized his senior year when he was selected to the Midwest College All-Star team. A two-year letterman, he also earned a pair of monograms in basketball and track.

As is the case with many of Hiram's top athletes, his campus involvement complemented his abilities as a student and an athlete. Ball and Chain Club, intramurals, theater productions and residence hall proctor are all listed in his activities file.

Professionally, 35 years of service to the Veterans Administration included a stunt as coordinator for Southeast Asia in Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan and Okinawa and concluded with his retirement in 1979. A former artillery battalion commander who served in France during WWII, his career also took him to Virginia as an office in the Roanoke regional station.
