He is one of only ten former Terrier wrestlers to have earned All-American status in the history of the program.

Wrestling at 142 pounds, he helped lead the team during his junior and senior seasons to a combined dual meet record of 27 wins against just 4 losses, and back-to-back 2nd Place finishes in the Presidents Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.

While at Hiram, under the mentoring of noted professor Dr. James Barrow, Alex developed a keen interest in biology, and served as a lab instructor during his undergrad years. After graduation, he went on to a 30-year career at the Cleveland Clinic as a Senior Biomedical Research Engineer, specializing in the design, development, and clinical trials of artificial hearts and ventricular assist devices. Over the years, he received several U.S. Patents and Innovation Awards for his work.

Although officially retired, Alex keeps busy and was recently chosen as the “Volunteer of the Year” at MedWish International, an organization that repurposes medical equipment for use in Third World countries. He also gives of his time and energy as a volunteer at a women’s shelter for survivors of domestic violence in Northeast Ohio.
