McLaughlin won four letters in football and was a running back with a never-say-die spirit that made him hard to stop. Francis was also a clever ball handling guard on the basketball team and a better-than-average shooter.
After graduation, he joined Canfield High School as a coach and coached both the football and basketball teams. His 1952-53 basketball team boasted a 27-2 record and advanced to the state semifinals. In his final year coaching basketball in 1964-65, he posted an 18-1 mark, among the best in Canfield history.
