William H. Hollinger Hall of Fame
Known to his players as "Mef", Mefort served as the coach of the Terrier football program from 1932-37. He had the unusual distinction of serving as a football coach while still finishing his undergraduate schooling, graduating as a member of the Class of 1934 with a degree in economics. The Spider Web said "Mef's superior quality of coaching improved Hiram football" and he lifted the morale of his team by "talking it up."
After leaving Hiram, he grained national recognition for his coaching exploits at Carnegie Tech, know today as Carnegie Mellon. During his 19-year tenure as the Central Michigan coach, he also served as Associate Professor of Physical Education and directed both high school and intramural athletics before his retirement in 1965.Â
Besides his coaching achievements "Mef" demonstrated his civic duty through his membership in the Lions and Elks Clubs.
