Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. - March 10, 2020 – Hiram Terriers baseball fell twice to the Haverford College Fords, 17-0 and 15-6 on Tuesday on their third day of the 30th Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park. The Terriers fall to 2-4 on the year, while the Fords move to 4-4.
GAME 1: Haverford 17, Hiram 0
Vince Suso recorded the first hit of the game for the Terriers in top of the first, doubling down the left-field line, but it was the Fords who got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the frame.
Will Karp led off the bottom of the first with a double and stole third. Zach Landry then followed with a double of his own, scoring Karp to give Haverford a 1-0 lead. After Luke Smith struck out looking, Luke Wallis brought Landry home with an RBI single to center, extending the Fords' lead to 2-0.
Shawn May got Grant Schwartz to ground into a fielder's choice and struck out Ryan Schwartz to end the inning, but Haverford added five more runs in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 9-0 and force Hiram to make a pitching change.
Haverford scored six more in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 17-0, before Matt Norton shut the Fords down with a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
At the plate, Hiram managed just three hits against Josh Fuller (2-0), who earned the win. May (0-1) took the loss for Hiram.
GAME 2: Haverford 15, Hiram 6
The Fords again got things going early against the Terriers, scoring three runs in the top of the first, three more in the top of the second and five in the top of the third to take an 11-0 lead. Karp's solo shot to center highlighted the three-run second for the Fords, while Karp added an RBI triple in the third.
After Alexander Zane Brown pitched a scoreless top of the fourth though, the Terriers got the bats going in the bottom of the frame. Mike Eversole led off with a single and advanced to second on Cole Bates groundout. Gavin Taulbee followed with a single and Tanner Allison walked to bring up Cody Wilson, who singled to center, scoring Eversole to give the Terriers their first run of the game.
Kyle Harris then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it an 11-2 Haverford lead.
Brown again shut the Fords down in the top of the fifth, allowing just one hit and two walks over 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, before the Terriers scored another two runs in the bottom of the frame.
After Eversole drew a one-out walk, Bates tripled to right-center to cut Haverford's lead to 11-3, and Taulbee followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bates to make it a seven-run game.
However, the Fords answered with four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth, capping the inning with Landry's second home run of the day.
Hiram scored two in the bottom of the sixth on Kyle Workman's two-run double to cut Haverford's lead to 15-6, and Logan Bailey pitched a scoreless top of the seventh, working around two hits and a walk.
But Brandon Jenkins shut the Terriers down in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the 15-6 victory for the Fords.
Jeff Spencer (0-1) took the loss for Hiram, while Ryan Giovenco (3-1) earned the win for Haverford.
Taulbee went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Workman went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Eversole led the Terriers with two runs scored, going 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, while Harris drew three walks, going 0-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.
The Terriers will wrap up their eight games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Wednesday, March 11 when they take on Skidmore College at the Lee County Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. in a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 a.m.
