Terrier Baseball Drops Road Test to Allegheny

Box Score

The Hiram baseball team dropped an unconventional single-game conference matchup to Allegheny College, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Gators and Terriers were playing the first game of their postponed doubleheader from Tuesday. Game two will be played on Sunday, April 22.

Allegheny did all of their offensive damage in the first two innings, striking for a run in the first and three more in the second.

After settling in, starting pitcher Alex Perrella held Allegheny scoreless through the third and fourth before he was chased with no outs in the fifth inning.

He turned the ball over to junior Justin Joyce and senior Kyle Watson, who both pitched efficiently out of the bullpen.

Joyce allowed just one hit in the fifth and sixth innings, while Watson faced the minimum in the seventh and eighth, striking out three on just 27 pitches.

As for the Terrier offense, Hiram had a hard time getting anything going against Gator starter Jarod Deagan, who threw a complete game, allowing just six hits and an earned run while fanning 11 Terriers.

Hiram scratched out a run in the fourth as Alex Gould led off the inning with a double. Three batters later, Tyler Duben brought Gould home with a RBI ground out.

The Terriers would inch closer in the eighth as Tyler Haas reached on a fielding error with one out in the frame. Curtis Caithaml then tallied his team-leading 12th RBI of the season, singling home Haas to cut into the lead.

Hiram continued to threaten later in the inning, placing runners on second and third with two outs. However, Deagan got out of the inning, keeping the game at 5-2. The matchup would end by the same score.

Offensively, Gould led the way with two doubles. Duben and Caithaml each tallied a RBI, while Vince Suso and Will Howell added the other two hits for the Terriers.

Hiram will be back in action on Saturday, April 21, as the team travels to Greencastle, Ind. for a meeting with NCAC foe, DePauw. The doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start.
