Terrier Baseball Drops Two in Season-Opening Doubleheader

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Hiram College baseball team opened the 2018 season with a pair of games against Pitt-Bradford. The Terriers dropped the first game, 18-3, before falling 13-4 in game two.

The biggest turning point in the first game came in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Panthers took advantage of 11 free passes to score 11 runs en route to the win.

Overall, Hiram surrendered 16 walks in the opening game.

Despite the outcome a few Terriers tallied solid performances. Junior Justin Joyce worked two strong innings of relief, not allowing a run while striking out three. Junior A.J. Armstrong also tallied a strikeout and no runs in his relief appearance, closing down the sixth inning.

Offensively, sophomore Curtis Caithaml made the most of his first-career start. He posted three hits in three trips, tallying a RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Mike Eversole also posted two hits in the game, while Tyler Duben and Tyler Carcioppolo added one RBI, each.

In game two, the Terriers once again fell behind early, trailing 9-0 after five innings. Hiram would scrape together four runs in the final two frames before falling by the 13-4 final.

Armstrong once again was efficient on the mound in his relief appearance. The junior tallied 1.2 innings of work, allowing just one hit. Overall, he allowed just two hits in a pair of appearances, pitching 2.1 innings.

Once again, Caithaml led the offensive effort, going 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Alex Perrella also reached base three times.

Other players playing in their first day as Terriers collected career milestones. Sophomore Alex Gould and freshmen David Paus and Tommy Dailey tallied their first-career hits, while Paus also added his first RBI. Freshman Parker Emerine and Vince Suso also tallied their first-career runs.

Overall, Caithaml had himself a day at the plate, going 6-for-7 with an extra-base hit and a pair of RBIs.

 Hiram will be back in action on Monday morning as they take on Defiance College. The matchup against the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 9 AM.
