WOOSTER, Ohio – The Hiram College baseball team was swept in their final pair of games against Wooster on Monday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots came into the doubleheader ranked fifth in the country. With the wins, Wooster now stands at 29-6 (14-2 NCAC), while the Terriers fall to 14-19 (4-12 NCAC).
Wooster dominated game one, outscoring Hiram 5-0. The Fighting Scots scored a pair in the second inning before tacking on three more in the fourth.
Brandon Chesmar performed well offensively over the course of the game. The first baseman went 2-2, leading the team in hits. He also tallied one walk.
Tyler Duben took the loss for Hiram, recording his first of the season. The pitcher now stands at 2-1 on the season.
The Fighting Scots carried their momentum over into game two, notching seven runs in their first at-bat (7-0). Hiram then answered back with pair of runs to cut the Wooster lead to five (7-2).
The Terriers loaded the bases with three straight singles by Tyler Carcioppolo, Vito Petrillo and Eric Martin. Kyle Torok followed with reaching on a fielder's choice, with Carcioppolo being thrown out at home. Petrillo and Martin then came around to score in the next at-bat, thanks to a single to left center by Ty Walchanowicz.
Hiram went scoreless until the sixth inning, while Wooster tacked on five more runs (12-2). In the top of the sixth, the Terriers racked up five runs to make the score 12-7.
With Martin and Jacob Nagy on first and third, Torok singled up the middle to score Nagy. After a single by Walchanowicz loaded a bases, a costly throwing error by third baseman Garrett Crum made Bryan Engdahl safe at first in addition to scoring in Martin and Torok. Brian Fryda brought in the final pair of Terrier runs with a 2-RBI double to right center.
The Terriers would not score in their remaining frames, while Wooster added three more runs to secure the 15-7 win.
With the loss, Alex Perrella now holds an 0-2 record.
Carcioppolo led the Hiram offense in game two, notching four hits in five at-bats, while Petrillo and Walchanowicz followed with three hits apiece. Walchanowicz also tied Fryda in RBIs (2).
Hiram will next host Westminster in a doubleheader tomorrow, May 2. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
