Engdahl's Walk-Off Winner Highlights Baseball's Split with Mount Union

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

April 5 – HIRAM, Ohio – Highlighted by a walk-off, RBI single from sophomore Bryan Engdahl, the Hiram College baseball team earned a non-conference split with the University of Mount Union on Wednesday evening. The Terriers dropped the first game, 7-0, before Engdahl's game-winner gave the Terriers the 3-2 victory.

Hiram trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, before putting together a rally to snag the victory in game two. Brian Fryda led off the seventh by drawing a lead-off walk against relief pitcher Noah Skladan. The sophomore short stop was then moved into scoring position on a one-out single by Alex Perrella.

With Fryda on second, and pinch runner Kyle Torok on first base, Brandon Gros and Chesmar came through with back-to-back singles. Gros singled through the left side of the infield to score Fryda for the game tying run.

Sitting with an 0-2 count after fouling off the first two pitches, Engdahl came through with a one-out single down the left field line, scoring Torok for the game-winning run.

The Terrier pitching staff kept Hiram in the ball game after Mount Union had taken a 2-0 advantage through the first 3.2 innings. The Purple Raiders tallied a run in the first on a sac fly by Joey Keleman, before getting a RBI single from Collin Scott in the fourth.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth inning, freshman Logan Huffman came on in relief and stranded all three runners to get out of the jam and kept the Terriers within striking distance.

Huffman continued to pitch well throughout the contest, going 3.0 full innings allowing just one hit and striking out one.

All in relief appearances this season, Huffman has thrown 10.1 innings while not allowing an earned run halfway through his freshman campaign.

Hiram pulled the game back within a run in the bottom of the fifth as Gros doubled home Vito Petrillo. Following two more scoreless frames by the Terrier pitching staff, the offense broke through to improve Hiram to 10-7 on the year.

Starting pitcher Tyler Duben got the start on the mound for the Terriers, going 3.0 innings while allowing just three hits and an earned run while striking out one.

Mount Union forced the split of the series by capturing game one, 7-0. Once again, the Hiram bullpen was solid, as the combination of Clayton Torok, Kyle Watson and Lane Kiser combined to allow just three hits and no earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.

Offensively in the doubleheader, Engdahl led the way, picking up three total hits. He tallied a pair in game one before finishing with the game-winner in the night cap.

Throughout the season, the sophomore center fielder has been one of the team's most consistent hitters, averaging .394 while leading the way with 13 RBIs.

In game one, Alex Perrella and Eric Martin also each tallied a pair of hits. Perrella is currently hitting .400 on the season, while Martin put together his first multi-hit game of the year.

Hiram will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9, as they travel to Gambier, Ohio to open North Coast Athletic Conference action with a four-game set with Kenyon College. The Saturday doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
