GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore Phil Ward (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) homered twice as the Hiram College baseball team scored four times in the 11th inning en route to a 11-7 win at Grove City (Pa.) on Tuesday.
The Terriers are now 3-13 on the season, while the Wolverines drop to 15-6.
Both of Ward's home runs were solo shots. Sophomore Brandon Kish (Poland, Ohio/Struthers) also registered his first homer of his career in the win.
Grove City wasted no time scoring, plating three runs in the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Hiram answered with a bases loaded walk in the second, but the Wolverines came right back with a run in the bottom of the frame to open a 4-1 edge.
In the third, the Terriers got a RBI double by senior Trevor Foster (Warren, Ohio/Champion) and a RBI single from junior Brandon Chesmar (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele).
Grove City plated a run in the fourth to go up 5-3, but Hiram would score twice in the fifth to knot the score at 5-5. Freshman Preston Patterson (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) singled to right to drive in a run and an error on the play allowed another Terrier to score.
Ward gave Hiram the lead in the seventh on his first homer and Kish followed with a RBI single later in the inning to make the score 7-5.
Grove City forced extra innings by scoring twice in the ninth.
Hiram was able to blow the game open in the 11th inning, scoring four times.
Ward led off the inning with another solo blast to put the Terriers in front for good. Junior Kyle Torok (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) would reach on a fielder's choice a few batters later and an error on the play brought home Chesmar.
Torok's speed paid off as he swiped third and was able to come around to score on a throwing error. Kish capped off the huge inning, with his homer to left.
Five different Terriers finished with at least two hits, led by Patterson, who went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Kish and Ward also had 2-RBI's apiece.
Freshman Lane Kiser (Bellfontaine, Ohio/Bellfontaine) gave up three runs in 5.0 innings of work. Junior Clayton Torok (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) picked up the win, giving up just two earned runs and striking out five batters in 4.1 innings.
The Terriers will have a quick turnaround and will take on Kenyon on Wednesday, April 6 in a makeup doubleheader from this past weekend. First pitch is set for noon.
