HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College baseball team came up on the wrong end of a pair of games in a doubleheader against Wooster on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots (18-8, 6-2 NCAC East) took the first game 8-3 and were victorious in the second game by a 7-5 score in 10 innings.
In the second game, Wooster scored twice in the third inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead, only to see Hiram (6-22, 3-11 NCAC East) storm back with three in the bottom of the inning.
With the bases loaded, senior Trevor Foster (Warren, Ohio/Champion) drew a walk to bring home the first tun. Junior Brandon Gros (Ravenna, Ohio/Crestwood) followed with a 2-RBI double to put the Terriers in front 3-2.
The Fighting Scots would tie the game in the top half of the seventh and then took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth.
Hiram would tie the game in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of a RBI single from Gros that brought in junior Brandon Chesmar (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele).
Neither team was able to push a run across in the ninth inning, sending the game to extra innings.
Wooster was able to strike for three runs in the 10th inning, to open a 7-4 advantage.
Hiram would not go away and threatened in the 10th.
With two out, the Terriers were able to load the bases. Freshman Christian Owens (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Woodridge) would be hit by a pitch to bring home a run. The Fighting Scots were able to induce a groundout to end the game and hang on for the 7-5 win.
Gros went 3-for-4 with 3-RBI's, while Chesmar came around to score twice.
In the first game, Wooster was able to take a 7-0 lead through four innings, keyed by a 4-run third inning.
The Terriers would get on the board in the sixth, getting back-to-back RBI fielder's choices from sophomore Phil Ward (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) and Foster. Hiram would tack on another run in the inning as Ward scored on a wild pitch.
But the Fighting Scots added a run in the seventh to close out the 8-3 victory.
The Terriers were limited to three hits in the game.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday, April 24, for another doubleheader to close out the 4-game weekend series. First pitch is set for noon.
