ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Junior Brandon Chesmar (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele) blasted his first career home run, but the Hiram College baseball team dropped a 20-8 non-conference contest at Mount Union on Thursday.
The Terriers are now 1-10 on the season, while the Purple Raiders stand at 6-7.
Chesmar went 3-for-4 with three RBI's, including his two-run homer.
Freshman Bryan Engdahl (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) collected three hits, while sophomore Phil Ward (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights), freshman Bryan Fryda (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) and freshman Preston Patterson (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) all had two hits. Ward also finished with three RBI's.
The Terriers struck for two runs in the first inning on RBI hits by Ward and Chesmar.
Mount Union countered with a run in the bottom of the first, but Hiram exploded for five runs in the second to build a 7-1 lead.
Fryda laced a RBI single to score a run and Ward singled home both junior Brandon Gros (Ravenna, Ohio/Kent Roosevelt) and Fryda. Chesmar closed out the rally with his two-run dinger to right center.
The Purple Raiders answered with a run in the second, but Hiram got it right back in the third thanks to a single by Engdahl that scored Patterson.
But it was all Mount Union from there, as the Purple Raiders scored 18 unanswered runs, including an eight run seventh inning, to put the game away.
Jimmy Scott paced Mount Union, hitting for the cycle, while driving in four runs and scoring three times.
Hiram will look to rebound on Saturday, March 19, as the Terriers hit the road to take on PSU-Fayette in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
