Baseball Ends Season With Win Against Denison

Box Score

GRANVILLE, OHIO  --  The Hiram College baseball team capped the 2014 season with a victory against Denison University, 12-5, in the final game of a three-game series against the Big Red as part of the North Coast Athletic Conference Cross-Over Weekend.

Denison (20-19, 14-5 NCAC) jumped out early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Hiram (15-19, 8-11 NCAC) came right back to answer the three scores with three runs of their own in the top half of the second on a two-RBI single by junior infielder/pitcher Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) and a RBI-ground out by freshman outfielder Ty Walchanowicz (Garfield Heights) to even the score at 3-3.  The game remained tied until the top of the fourth when Hiram plated a run on a RBI-single by junior outfielder Jeff Segal (West Bloomfield, Mich./North Farmington) to give the Terriers a 4-3 advantage.  Hiram added a run the very next inning on a RBI-base hit by senior infielder Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington) to extend the margin to 5-3.  The Terriers then broke the game open in the ninth, crossing home plate seven times highlighted by a pair of two-RBI base hits on another single by DeAmicis and a single by junior infielder Mark Leone (Boardman) to make the score 12-3.  Denison looked to rally by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Hiram lead was too great to overcome as the Terriers went on to the 12-5 final.

Both teams recorded 13 hits in the game with the Terriers led by Haidet who finished a perfect five-of-five at the plate in addition to a pair of runs scored and RBI.  DeAmicis went two-of-five to go along with a run scored and four RBI.  Rounding out the multi-hit games was Segal who posted a two-of-four effort with a run scored and a RBI.

On the mound, junior Pat Rhodes (Girard) pitched eight innings allowing three runs, none earned, on 11 hits and had one strikeout.  He also earned the win and ends the season with a 3-3 overall mark.  Senior All-NCAC infielder/pitcher Tim Calhoun (Canfield) came on to pitch the final inning surrendering two runs on two hits and struck out a batter.
