Baseball Splits With Kenyon; Jenter Gets 300th Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HIRAM, OHIO  --  The Hiram College baseball team split its first of two North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheaders against Kenyon College at Robert O. Fishel Field.  The Terriers defeated the Lords, 10-9, in game one, but were defeated, 14-1, in the nightcap.  In addition, with the victory in game one, Head Coach Howard Jenter recorded his 300th career victory.

Kenyon (11-21, 2-12 NCAC) struck early with a run in the top of the first inning on a solo homerun, but Hiram (12-17, 5-9 NCAC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second that included a RBI-single by senior infielder Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington) and a RBI-ground out by freshman infielder Ryan Fedor (Mantua/Crestwood) with bases loaded to make the score, 2-1.  The Lords looked to take control with a five-run third inning, that included a three-run homer, to move ahead on the scoreboard, 6-2.  The Terriers crossed the plate three times in fourth, but this time Kenyon answered with three runs of its own in the top-half of the fifth to extend the margin back to four runs, 9-5.  Hiram evened the score at 9-9 in the fifth thanks to a pair of homeruns in the inning, a solo homerun by junior infielder Jim Jaksa (Chesterland/West Geauga) and a three-run shot by senior outfielder George Blake (Parma) later in the frame.  The Terriers then took the lead for good in the sixth thanks to a run which came on a RBI-single by senior All-NCAC catcher/pitcher Tim Calhoun (Canfield) giving Hiram a 10-9 advantage heading into the top of the seventh.  Calhoun took over the pitching duties in the seventh and recorded two quick outs to begin the inning.  Kenyon then got a runner on base via a single and later moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.  During the next Lord at-bat, Kenyon found the outfield, but the runner on second would be thrown out at home on a relay from right field, giving Hiram the 10-9 win.

Hiram had 10 hits in the game and was led by Jaksa who finished three-of-four with two runs scored and a RBI.  Haidet was the only other player to record multiple hits, going two-of-two with two runs scored and two RBI.  Five other Terriers each recorded a base hit in the game.

On the mound, junior J.T. Taylor (Niles) started the game and pitched five-and-a-third innings allowing nine runs, four earned, on 10 hits and struck out three batters.  He would be credited with a no decision as fellow junior Tanner Gilchrist (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) came on to pitch two-thirds of an inning and would become the "pitcher of record" and claimed his third victory of the season to improve to 3-1 overall.  Calhoun finished the game, pitching an inning and gave up no runs on two hits and had one strikeout.  He also posted his fifth save of the season, setting a Hiram single-season record.  The previous record was held by Dustin Allen who had four saves during the 2000 season.

In addition, Jenter reached the 300th-win plateau with the win against Kenyon.  Jenter, a 1985 graduate of Hiram, is currently in his 23rd season as Head Coach.  He is already the program's winningest coach, which he took over the honor from long-time coach Bill Proverbs (1960-91) last season, and now has a 300-500-2 record.

In the nightcap, the game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Kenyon struck for four runs.  Hiram got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a RBI-double by Jaksa to make it a 4-1 game.  But the Lords then went on an offensive tear, scoring a run in the fifth, five runs in the sixth and one more run in the seventh to extend their lead to 11-1.  Kenyon went on to add two insurance runs in the top of the ninth as the Lords recorded 17 hits in the game and cruised to the 14-1 victory.

Hiram ended game two with six hits with six different players recording hits.  Jaksa finished the game one-of-three to go along with his RBI.  Sophomore infielder/designated hitter Trevor Foster (Warren/Champion) scored the lone run for the Terriers and went one-of-three overall at the plate.

Freshman Brandon Chesmar (Elyria/Amherst Steele) started the game on the mound for Hiram and was one of four pitchers to see action.  He pitched three and two-thirds innings, but suffered the loss and is now 4-2 overall for the season.  Chesmar allowed four runs on five hits and had two strikeouts.

Hiram will host Kenyon in a second NCAC doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday, Apr. 27) in the conference regular-season finale at Fishel Field.  It will be senior day with the first game  scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
