Baseball Loses Doubleheader Against Wooster

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NILES, OHIO  --  The Hiram College baseball team lost its final two games of a four-game series against North Coast Athletic Conference opponent The College of Wooster, 8-5 and 18-1, at Eastwood Field in Niles.

In game one, Wooster (16-9, 7-1 NCAC) got on the board early with a run in the top of the first inning on a caught stealing putout that allowed a runner from third to score.  The Fighting Scots added another run in the second, but Hiram (7-15, 4-8 NCAC) got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI-double by senior infielder Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington) to make the score 2-1.  Hiram tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the fifth thanks to a RBI-single by junior outfielder Jaren Bell (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton).  The Scots then took control in the top of the seventh with six runs to take an 8-2 advantage.  The Terriers looked to rally in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs that included a RBI-double by freshman infielder Josh Morales (El Monte, Calif./El Monte).  Later in the inning, Hiram would have a runner at every base with only one out, but the possible comeback ended there as the Scots were able to get the Terriers to hit into back-to-back outs to end the game and hold on for the 8-5 final.

Hiram had 10 hits in the game with Haidet and junior infielder Mark Leone (Boardman) both finishing two-of-three at the plate.  Haidet also added a run scored and RBI.  Junior All-NCAC infielder/catcher Jim Jaksa (Chesterland/West Geauga) also finished with a pair of hits going two-of-four overall and scored a run.

On the mound, junior J.T. Taylor (Niles) started the game and pitched six-and-a-third innings giving up six runs on eight hits and had four strikeouts.  Senior All-NCAC pitcher/infielder Tim Calhoun (Canfield) and junior Tanner Gilchrist (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) both pitched a third of an inning.  Calhoun allowed two runs, none earned, on three hits and Gilchrist gave up no hits or runs.

In a repeat of yesterday's game two, Wooster took control of the game early scoring five runs in the top of the first inning that included a two-run homerun.  The Scots added four more runs in the third highlighted by another two-run homer to extend the lead to 9-0.  Hiram got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame on a RBI-single by freshman outfielder Ty Walchanowicz (Garfield Heights), but Wooster blew the game open with a seven-run fourth inning to make it a 16-1 ball game.  The Scots went on to add runs in the sixth and eighth innings, both on sacrifice flyouts, to post the 18-1 victory.

Hiram recorded four hits in game two with Walchanowicz, Leone, junior infielder/pitcher Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) and freshman outfielder Brandon Gros (Ravenna/Roosevelt) all reaching base safely via a base hit.

Five Terrier pitchers saw action in the game with freshman Brandon Chesmar (Elyria/Amherst Steele) getting the start and going two and two-thirds innings giving up seven runs, four earned, on seven hits with one strikeout.  He was also credited with the loss and is now 3-1 overall for the season.

Hiram is scheduled to travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for a non-conference doubleheader against D'Youville (N.Y.) College on Thursday, Apr. 17.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
