Box Score 2 MEADVILLE, PA. -- The Hiram College baseball team fell twice to Allegheny (Pa.) College, 2-0 and 14-4 in seven innings, in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader in Meadville, Pa.
With the losses, the Terriers fall to 8-16 overall and 0-8 in the NCAC. The Gators improve to 8-15 overall and 2-0 NCAC.
The first game featured only two runs, but both runs were scored by the Gators with a run in the bottom of the third and fifth innings. Hiram recorded five hits in the game, but would leave six men on base as the Gators went on to post the 2-0 shutout.
All of the Terriers' five hits came from five different players. Senior catcher/infielder Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes) finished one-for-two at the plate, with the four other players ending up one-for-three.
On the mound, junior Mike Lalonde (Willowick/South) pitched a solid game allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits, but suffered the loss and is now 1-4 overall on the year. Lalonde also tallied five strikeouts.
The second game featured a lot more scoring as Allegheny led 3-2 after the first inning. The Gators got some breathing room in the third with four runs and tacked on another run in the fourth to lead 8-2. Hiram crossed the plate on two occassions in the fifth thanks to a RBI double by junior infielder Lee Cancilla (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) and a RBI single by Miller narrowing the gap to 8-4. But that would be as close as Hiram would get as Allegheny scored a run in the sixth and ended the game with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the 10-run mercy rule in effect for a 14-4 victory.
Hiram was led by Miller who finished two-of-three at the plate, including a run scored and a RBI. Four other Terriers each recorded a base hit in the game.
Freshman pitcher Nate Weiss (Warren, Mich./University Liggett) got the start and would pitch six complete innings allowing nine runs, six earned, on nine hits and struck out three batters. He was also credited with the loss and drops to 1-4 overall for the season. Fellow freshman Tre Carpenter (Akron/Kenmore) pitched the final third of an inning giving up five runs on three hits.
Hiram will take on Allegheny again tomorrow (Saturday, Apr. 7) in a second NCAC doubleheader in Meadville, Pa. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
