Box Score 2 HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College baseball team lost a pair of games against Kenyon College, 17-2 and 15-4, in a rescheduled North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Robert O. Fishel Field in the season finale on senior day.
With the losses, the Terriers end their season with an 8-26 overall record and 0-16 in the NCAC. The Lords improve to 27-10 overall and 13-3 NCAC.
In game one, Kenyon took control right from the start and built a commanding 9-0 lead after three innings of play, that included a pair of solo homeruns by the Lords and a three-run shot. Hiram got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI groundout by junior infielder Lee Cancilla (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) with runners on second and third to make the score 9-1. Kenyon then added seven more runs in the top of the fifth and another run in the sixth to lead 17-1. The Terriers recorded their final run of the game in the sixth on a defensive error, but the Lords went on to claim a 17-2 win.
Hiram posted six hits in the game and was led by junior outfielder/pitcher Travis Richey (Petersburg/Spingfield Local) who finished two-of-three at the plate.
On the mound, junior Mike Lalonde (Willowick/South) started the game and went two and two-thirds innings allowing nine runs on nine hits and struck out four batters. He was also credited with the loss and ends the season with a 1-6 record. Freshman duo of J.T. Taylor (Niles) and Logan Schaefer (Columbiana/Crestview) finished the game with Taylor pitching two-and-a-third innings giving up seven runs, four earned, on six hits and had two strikeouts. Schaefer pitched the final two innings allowing one run on four hits and had one strikeout.
In game two, Kenyon jumped out early again scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. But Hiram came right back in the bottom of the frame scoring three runs highlighted by a pair of RBI-singles by freshman infielder Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) and senior designated hitter/catcher Paul Yoculan (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) to make the score 4-3. The Lords then blew the game open with a six-run second that included a two-run and solo homerun to extend the lead to 10-3. Hiram tallied what would be its final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore catcher/infielder Tim Calhoun (Canfield) went yard on a solo shot, his second of the season, making the score 10-4. Kenyon put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth and two more runs in the ninth to cruise to the 15-4 victory.
Hiram posted 12 hits in game two with Calhoun leading the way going three-of-five at the plate with two runs scored and a RBI. Four other Terriers recorded multi-hit games with Richey finishing two-of-four with a run scored. Senior infielder/catcher Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes) had a two-of-five effort, sophomore outfielder George Blake (Parma) went two-of-five with a run scored, and DeAmicis finished the game two-of-four with a RBI.
Senior John Colla (Austintown/Ursuline) started game two and ptiched two innings giving up 10 runs on seven hits and had one strikeout. He also suffered the loss and ends the season with a 1-6 mark. Freshman Nate Weiss (Warren, Mich./University Liggett) pitched five innings of relief allowing no runs on just one hit and struck out four batters. Freshman Pat Rhodes (Girard) pitched the final two innings giving up five runs on six hits and had one strikeout.
