Baseball Drops a Pair of Games in Rescheduled Doubleheader Against Wooster

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HIRAM, OHIO  --  The Hiram College baseball team fell by the scores of, 4-3 and 12-2 in seven innings, against The College of Wooster in a rescheduled North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Robert O. Fishel Field.

With the losses, the Terriers are now 8-22 overall and 0-14 in the NCAC.  The Fighting Scots improve to 17-11 overall and 5-3 NCAC.

Wooster scored first in the opening game with two runs in the top of the second inning on a two-run double.  But Hiram answered in the bottom half of the inning scoring three times, including one run scoring on a RBI single by freshman outfielder Jeff Segal (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield), giving the Terriers a 3-2 lead.  Hiram maintained its lead until the sixth inning when the Scots crossed the plate twice to put the Terriers in a one-run deficit, 4-3.  Wooster then got Hiram to record six straight outs in the final two innings to hang on for a 4-3 win.

Hiram recorded four hits in the game with Segal, senior All-NCAC infielder Torrey Stimson (Hudson/Walled Lake, Mich.), sophomore outfielder George Blake (Parma) and freshman infielder Mark Leone (Boardman) all getting base hits.  Segal also had the RBI while Leone, junior infielder Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington) and freshman infielder Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) all scored runs in the game.

Freshman pitcher Nate Weiss (Warren, Mich./University Liggett) got the start and pitched a complete game going seven innings allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out five batters.  He was also credited with the loss and is now 1-5 overall on the year.

The second game started out in similar fashion to the first with Wooster tallying a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.  Hiram answered in the third scoring two runs to tie the game that included a solo homerun by Segal.  The Terriers' other run came on a RBI double by senior infielder/catcher Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes).  But the Scots regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs and broke the game open in the sixth with five runs, all coming via the long ball on three homeruns to extend the margin to 9-2.  Wooster went on to add three more scores in the top of the seventh and held Hiram scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to induce the 10-run rule and cruise to the 12-2 final.

Hiram was led at the plate by Segal who finished two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI on the solo homer.  Five other Terrier players each recorded a base hit.

On the mound, freshman Pat Rhodes (Girard) started the game and lasted five and two-thirds innings giving up seven runs on nine hits and had six strike outs.  He suffered the loss and dropped to 1-4 overall on the season.  Fellow freshman J.T. Taylor (Niles) came on to pitch an inning-and-a-third of relief and allowed five runs on six hits and struck out two.

Hiram will play against John Caroll University in a neutral site single nine-inning game tomorrow (Wednesday, Apr. 18) at Cene Park in Struthers.  First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
