Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against Oberlin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OBERLN, OHIO  --  The Hiram College baseball team dropped a doubleheader in back-to-back days against Oberlin College in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup in Oberlin.

With the losses, the Terriers fall to 8-14 overall and 0-6 in the NCAC.  The Yeomen improve to 15-10 overall and 4-0 NCAC.

The Oberlin offense took a sizeable lead early scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead 5-0.  Hiram battled back with three runs in the top of the second that included a two-RBI double by freshman infielder Mark Leone (Boardman) to cut the deficit to 5-3.  But the Yeomen offense kept the scoring going scoring four times in the bottom of the second and two more times in the third to lead 11-3.  Hiram crossed the plate once in the fourth on a RBI single by junior infielder Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington), but Oberlin shut the door again on a possible rally with four runs in the bottom of the inning and one more run in the fifth to blow the game open with a score of 16-4.  The Terriers got four runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI single by freshman outfielder Tanner Gilchrist (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln), but the Oberlin lead would be too great as the Yeomen went on to post a 16-8 win.

Hiram recorded 10 hits in the game with two Terriers posting a pair of hits.  Haidet fiinshed two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI.  Leone also had two hits, going two-of-four overall including a run scored and two RBI.

On the mound, senior John Colla (Austintown/Ursuline) got the start, but would be given the loss (1-3 overall) after giving up 11 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits and had one strikeout.  Freshman Pat Rhodes (Girard) came on to pitch the final three-and-a-third innings allowing five runs on seven hits and one strikeout.

In game two, Hiram got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning on a bases loaded walk with no outs.  The lone run would be all that the Terriers would get though as Hiram recorded three straight outs following the RBI walk keeping the score 1-0.  Oberlin answered the run with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to lead 4-1.  Hiram narrowed the gap to 4-2 with a score in the third, but the Yeomen tallied three scores in the fourth to break the game open at 7-2.  The Terriers looked to make a final charge in the seventh with a pair of runs on RBI singles by sophomore infielder/catcher Tim Calhoun (Canfield) and Haidet, his second of the game, to make the score 7-4.  Oberlin then added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh and hung on for the 8-4 final.

Senior All-NCAC infielder Torrey Stimson (Hudson/Walled Lake, Mich.) led the Hiram hitters with three hits (three-of-five overall).  Three additional players recorded multi-hit games with two hits, including Haidet who finished two-of-five with two RBI.  Calhoun turned in a two-for-three effort with a pair of runs scored and two RBI.

The freshman duo of Tre Carpenter (Akron/Kenmore) and J.T. Taylor (Niles) would see action for Hiram on the mound.  Carpenter started the game lasting three innings while allowing seven runs on six hits.  He would also get the loss and falls to 0-2 for the season.  Taylor had a strong showing going five innings giving up one run on six hits and had two strikeouts.

Hiram will continue the season on Friday, Apr. 6 for a four-game series against NCAC foe Allegheny (Pa.) College.  The Terriers will take on the Gators in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday with the first game on both days scheduled for noon.
