Box Score 2 FT. MYERS, FLA. -- Sophomore infielder Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington) had a combined seven runs batted in and scored four runs in a two-game sweep of Finlandia (Mich.) University today, 13-3 and 14-3, in Ft. Myers, Fla.
With the wins, the Terriers improve to 6-3 overall for the season.
In game one, Hiram took the early lead with a pair of RBI singles by sophomore catcher/outfielder George Blake (Parma) and sophomore catcher/infielder Tim Calhoun (Canfield) to make the score 2-0. Finlandia narrowed the gap with a run in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1. The Terriers got some breathing room with a four-run fourth inning highlighted by a hit by Haidet that found its way past the Lion outfielder and rolled to the fence allowing Haidet to circle the bases for an inside-the-park homerun and three RBI. Both teams traded runs in the sixth and Hiram blew the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh that included a two-RBI single by Haidet making the score 13-2. In the bottom half of the inning, Finlandia would score another run, but the Hiram lead was too great as the Terriers went on to capture a 13-3 win.
Hiram posted 16 hits in the game with four Terriers each recording three hits. Haidet finished the game three-of-five with two runs scored and five RBI. Senior catcher/infielder Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes) also went three-of-five and had two RBI. Blake finished the game a perfect three-of-three with two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman infielder Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) went three-of-four with three runs scored and a RBI.
On the mound, junior Travis Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local) picked up his second win of the season (2-0 overall) going six innings allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and struck out eight batters. Freshman Tre Carpenter (Akron/Kenmore) pitched the last inning allowing one run, while posting two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Hiram offense stayed hot and after giving up a run to begin the game, the Terriers took control with a nine-run bottom of the first inning that included a two-RBI single by Miller and a two-RBI double by Richey. Hiram didn't stop there as the Terriers crossed the plate four more times in the second and once more in the third to boast a 14-1 advantage. The Lions scored the final runs of the game with a pair of scores in the top of the fourth inning, but Hiram already had the game well in hand and cruised to a 14-3 victory.
Hiram belted 11 hits in game two with Miller leading the way. He finished three-of-four overall with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Haidet and DeAmicis both finished with a pair of hits. Haidet went two-of-four with two runs and two RBI, while DeAmicis was two-of-four with a RBI.
Freshman Pat Rhodes (Girard) started the game on the mound and got his first collegiate win to improve to 1-1 overall. He pitched five innings allowing three runs on five hits and struck out two. Junior Eric Cameron (Akron/Green) pitched the final two innings in relief giving up no runs and no hits.
Hiram will wrap-up its southern swing with a single nine-inning game tomorrow (Saturday, Mar. 10) against Dominican (Ill.) University. The first pitch is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
