TIFFIN, Ohio - January 24, 2025 - Hiram men's swimming kept its perfect season alive on Friday evening at the Tiffin YMCA, as the Terriers cruised to a 174-36 over Heidelberg.
The women's team also competed hard in a loss to a talented Student Princes team to commence the final weekend of the regular season, a two-meet, 48-hour span designed to prep both teams for the rigors of the NCAC Championships.
Men's Recap
It was a perfect day for the relay teams, with the 200-yard medley relay team (Landon Hughes, Jon Hybil, David Slovenkay, Ethan O'Malley – 1:46.35) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team (Owen Pastorius, Slovenkay, O'Malley, Hughes – 1:34.81) both placing first.Â
Highlighting the start of the individual events was Dayne Sauter in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:03.49), Owen Pastorius in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.60), Tanner Markley in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.97) and Jon Hybil in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.46). Up to that point in the meet, Hiram had won all five of the events on the men's side.
Although the streak eventually came to a halt, Hiram kept the momentum going with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (Slovenkay, 23.58), 100-yard freestyle (Pastorius, 50.83), 50-yard backstroke (Markley, 30.02) and Hybil in the 50-yard breaststroke (29.33).
Wrapping up the meet was another trio of individual victories: Hughes in the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.23), Joe Krosky in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.21) and Sauter in the 100-yard IM (57.15).
Women's Recap
The evening got going with a solid effort from the relay team of Haven Papineau, Natalie Brown, Madison Fleischer and Becca Johnston in the 200-yard medley relay (2:22.76). That group finished behind a Student Princes relay team that figures to make some noise at the OAC Championships next month.
Brown placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:38.42) and Papineau placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.00), a pair of student-athletes who have thrived throughout the season in those respective strokes. Madison Fleischer also had a strong day on the individual side, ranking third in the field of five student-athletes in the 50-yard freestyle (29.28).
Papineau and Fleischer returned to the pool in the 100-yard freestyle (1:09.01) and 50-yard backstroke (33.38). Brown followed suit with a new experience in the 50-yard breaststroke, racing her way to a clip of 38.87, which placed second.
Papineau capped off the day with a second-place mark in the 500-yard freestyle (6:10.15).
What's Next
Both teams will return to the pool in less than 24 hours, with a dual meet at Bethany scheduled for 3 p.m. in West Virginia.
