Hiram Baseball Unveils New Scoreboard for the 2021-22 Season

6/21/2021 5:00:00 PM

HIRAM, Ohio - June 21, 2021 Thanks to the generosity of Doug `82 and Julie Gruber, Hiram baseball is excited to unveil a new scoreboard at Fishel Field at Proverbs Park for the 2021-22 season.

"The generosity of our Hiram College Athletics alumni base has once again improved the game day experience for our current and future Terriers," Director of Athletics Todd W. Hibbs said. "This is the second of at least three scoreboard improvements that Hiram Athletics is making in short time, and the impact will be felt for many years to come. We thank Doug Gruber `82 for his leadership on this project and we remain grateful to all who support improvements like this in Hiram Athletics."

The new, 26'x18' scoreboard is almost double the size of the previous scoreboard, with a navy blue coloring, red accent striping, white captions and red LEDs. The brand new scoreboard, purchased through Digital Scoreboards, also features a 6-foot, domed, top ID panel complete with Hiram College baseball lettering and logo, as well as a 3-foot bottom panel for potential sponsors.

"Hiram College baseball would like to extend a huge amount of gratitude to Doug Gruber `82 and family for their generous donation to our field," Head Coach Phil Brua said. "We have worked very hard to improve the aesthetics of Fishel Field at Proverbs Park, and the addition of a new scoreboard will undoubtedly be a centerpiece for us to focus on and the new scoreboard will be a great piece to sell in the recruiting process. We can't say thank you enough!"

A two-time Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) First-Team Selection and the 1982 PAC Pitcher of the Year, Gruber was a four-year letter winner for the Terrier baseball program, and was inducted into the Hollinger Hall of Fame in 1995.

The Terriers' all-time leader in strikeouts (257), wins (21) and innings pitched (235.2), Gruber also ranks in the Top 10 in program history in earned run average, strikeouts and walks per nine innings.

Gruber also holds the single-season wins and strikeout records as well as the program record for the most strikeouts in a single game, set on March 31, 1982 when he struck out 18 batters against Walsh.

Fans will get their first look at the new scoreboard in action when the Terriers take on the Pitt. Greensburg Bobcats in their 2022 home opener on Thursday, March 17.
