Baseball Falls In Doubleheader At Case Western

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Ohio – March 13, 2021 - Hiram Terriers baseball fell twice to the Case Western Reserve Spartans, 9-2 and 6-5, on Saturday at Nobby's Ballpark. Hiram falls to 2-2 on the season while Case Western starts their season off 2-0.

GAME 1: Kyle Adams started the scoring for the road side with an RBI single that scoring Cody Wilson in the top of the second inning.

Starting pitcher Ben Gustely kept Case Western quiet through three innings before the Spartans stormed back.

Jacob Lott hit a two-run triple to start the scoring in the fourth inning for the home team. Justin Zachery hit a sacrifice fly scoring Lott to make it 3-1. Nick Talarico hit an RBI double with Zack Carinci scoring. Benjamin Stawicki reached on a fielder's choice scoring Carinci to cap the scoring and make it 5-1 Case Western.

John Lusnek pitched 3.2 innings of relief allowing four hits with no earned runs for Hiram.

The Spartans grabbed two more runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Jonathan Simon hit an RBI double scoring Cole Jarrett followed by Carinci hitting an RBI single scoring Simon making it 7-1.

In the seventh Carinci reached on a throwing error scoring Simon. Talarico then singled through the left side with Carinci coming around to score bolstering the Spartans lead to 9-1.

Hiram was able to tally a run in the ninth inning with Cody Wilson hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to right field scoring Cole Bates. The comeback attempt fell short however, with Case Western taking game one 9-2.

Ben Gustely (0-1) took the loss for the Terriers, while Nick Denove (1-0) took the win for the Spartans. 

GAME 2: The Terriers got things started in the top of the first inning starting with a two-run double by Evan Fairbanks scoring Andrew Church and Chaisson Marrs taking a 2-0 lead.
Daniel Wimsett hit an RBI single scoring Fairbanks bumping the Hiram lead to 3-0.

Case Western countered with a two-run first inning with Cole Jarrett reaching on a fielder's choice scoring Benjamin Stawicki. Jonathan Simon hit an RBI single scoring Flynn Lenahan.

In the third inning Marrs would single to lead off the inning. Marrs would then go on to steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Cole Bates walked and stole second base leading to Marrs being able to score and give Hiram a 4-2 lead.

Case Western would even up the game in the third with a two-run inning. Jacob Lott reached on a fielder's choice scoring Jarrett. Trey Haley then hit an RBI single bringing Lott across the plate.

The home side took the lead in the sixth inning with Lenahan hitting an RBI double scoring Stawicki. The Spartans would add onto their lead in the seventh when Nick Talarico hit an RBI groundout with Justin Zachery crossing the plate giving CWRU a 6-4 lead.

Leading off the top of the ninth inning was a Cole Bates single followed by a David Paus pinch hit single advancing Bates to third. With runners on the corners, Cody Wilson grounded out into a double play with David Paus out on the play due to interference. 

Curtis Caithaml hit an RBI double, but the Spartans were able to survive and win 6-5.

Tony Smodilla (1-0) picked up the win for CWRU while Jacob Kocuba (0-1) took the loss.

Marrs went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Evan Fairbanks went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. As a pinch hitter, Caithaml went two-for-two with an RBI.

Hiram's next game will be the home opener on Thursday, March 18 when they host Hilbert (N.Y.) in a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m.
