GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Hiram College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 overtime heartbreaker to No. 24 Denison on Saturday evening.
The Terriers drop to 5-4-2 on the season and 1-1-0 in NCAC play, while the Big Red improve to 9-0-1, 1-0-1.
Tim Evans was able to convert on a header off of a free kick at the 98:19 mark of of the match.
The two teams played through a scoreless first half, with the Terriers owning a 6-5 edge in shots. The Terriers had a shot in the 38th minute when junior Vaal Ngalla (Pickerington, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) fired a shot past the keeper, but was denied by the Denison defense.
In the second half, the Terriers had a chance in the 67th minute. Senior Tanner Mathews (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) took a penalty kick that was denied by the Big Red goalkeeper. His follow up effort was pushed wide to the left.
Denison took the first shot of overtime that was saved by senior goalie Matt Sacher (Akron, Ohio/Coventry).
The Big Red also took a shot a shot at the 92:57 mark that sailed wide.
Senior Richie Webb (London, England/Laude Lady Elizabeth Academy) fired a header in overtime that was saved.
Denison took a shot at the 98:00 mark and then converted the game winner just seconds later.
Sacher made seven saves in goal and took his second loss of the season.
The Big Red outshot the Terriers 20-14 and also had a 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
Hiram will play next on October 10, when it travels to take on DePauw (Ind.) at noon.
