HIRAM, Ohio - February 12, 2026- The Hiram track & field team has already been off to an impressive start to their indoor season, with multiple school records broken this past month alone. The Terriers' success has now been nationally recognized in USTFCCCA's event squad rankings, with the women's shot put squad ranked 24th as a group.
Some notable teams ranked ahead of the Terriers include in-state opponents in Ohio Northern (12th) and Mount Union (16th), as well as national powerhouses like Wisconsin-La Crosse (2nd), Wisconsin-Oshkosh (9th) and Johns Hopkins (21st). The Terriers have competed well when stacked up against these dominant programs and have put themselves in position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Hiram women's shot put has thrown a combined best mark of 46.39 meters, with an average of 11.60 meters from each thrower. Leading the charge for the Terriers is Sam Volpe, who has thrown a school record of 12.92 meters this season, which still ranks 34th in the nation and fifth in the Great Lakes Region. Also emerging for the Terriers is Angelina Weems, who has a best mark of 11.63 meters this season. Weems is currently ranked 17th in the region, as the freshman is already making impressive progress in her first collegiate season. Kayla Mack has been outstanding in her junior season, with a season-best mark of 10.99 meters, which ranks third on the team. Rounding out the Terriers in the event squad rankings is junior Kylie Moser, who has thrown for a season-best 10.85 meters this season.
First-year throws coach Eddie Hines, who has led this group throughout the winter, was really proud of his student-athletes and the way they worked.
"I'm proud of everything they have done," Hines said. "The big focus was technique and they've done excellent with trying to hit those cues. We are trying to get their technique as consistent as possible."
Individually, Hines stated that "all of his girls embody their own leadership role," but mentions athletes like Volpe, who "sets the standard for what we need to achieve."
Hines continued to mention other athletes, stating that Weems "keeps people honest and has a great work ethic, and that (Weems) will come in and put in the work that is necessary, sometimes going above and beyond. But that also goes for everybody else," Hines said.
Hines finished by saying that the goal is to get "1% better each and every day."
Hiram's indoor throws group also includes Chloe Cooper, as well as Claryssa Panayotti, McKenzie Thomas and Rylie Petroff, who will be joining the team for the outdoor season.
The Terriers will be back in action on Friday, when they travel to Oberlin for the Crimson and Gold Invite, with the first events scheduled for 5 p.m.
