Hiram Track & Field Rewrites Record Books At Spire Midwest Collegiate Open

Terriers Perform At Record-Setting Level With Multiple Personal Bests And School Records In 1st Meet of 2026

GENEVA, Ohio – January 24, 2026 – The Hiram track & field team traveled to Geneva, OH on Saturday afternoon for the Spire Midwest Collegiate Open. It was a very successful day for the Terriers, as the team opened up the calendar year with a meet to remember.

There were many records set, which led for a very fast day on the track and a very well day in the field events. In total, there were six school records broken, as well as numerous personal bests in a successful day. 

The Terriers started in the field, with the shot put starting out as the firstevent. The Terriers' own Sam Volpe came out victorious, beating multiple Division I and Division II athletes in way to setting a new personal best and a school record with a throw of 12.92 meters. This mark now puts Volpe as the 18th best mark in the nation as well as third in the region for shot put. Also setting a new personal best in shot put was Chloe Cooper, who finished with a mark of 10.11 meters.  

Setting another personal record in the field events was Angelina Weems, who threw 12.15 meters in the weight throw in her collegiate debut. The Terriers success also carried in the field, with Sarah Douglas setting a new indoor personal best in the long jump with a jump of 4.16 meters and Karalyn Rutkowski setting a new personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters. 

On the track side, the Terriers came out hot, never faltering at any moment. In the 800 meters, an indoor program record was set by Aidan Shiels, who ran a time of 1:57.25, beating the prevoius record set by DeAco Curry. (1:58.38 in 2025). Curry was also not far behind in the 800 as well, as he was a few tenths of a second off of his PR, running a time 1:58.95.  

In the 200 meters, a new school record and personal best was set by Kevin Dycks, who beat his old school record by .25 seconds, running a time of 23:00. In the 60-meter hurdles, Sebastian Regalado set a personal best and school record, finishing with a time of 8.91 seconds, beating out his previous record (9.10). 

Later, in the 400-meter dash, Kamran Walton broke a 20-year-old indoor record, setting a new school record with a time of 51.60, beating out the previous record of newly inducted Hall-of-Famer Bruce Alexander (51.85 in 2001). Lastly, the men's 4x400 meter relay team of Walton, Kyle Filkill, Shiels, and Curry set a new school record, finishing in 2nd place with a time of 3:31.25.  

For the women, there were a lot of top individual performances, marking a very successful day for the program. In the 60-meter hurdles, Trezure Bates qualified for the finals and finished with a time of 9.66 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Frances Popik set a new personal best with a time of 1:03.50, as well as setting a new 200-meter personal best, finishing with a time of 28.31. Staying in the 200 meters, Makyndree Smith and Mikayla Palmer set a new personal best in the 200 meters, finishing with times of 28.72 and 28.27, respectively.
