DELAWARE, Ohio - April 6, 2024 - The Hiram track & field teams continued their strong start to the outdoor season on Saturday at the Marv Frye Invitational on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.
Makyndree Smith and Sam Volpe highlighted the women's side, while Marciano McCowan made his presence felt in the men's events.
Men's Recap
McCowan placed fifth out of 25 student-athletes in the javelin, with a mark of 43.89m (144'). This past week, McCowan nearly won the event at the Bob Kahn Invitational (44.77m).
Dre Nelson had the team's top time in the 100-meter dash (11.92), while Jacob Mancini did the same in the 200-meter dash (24.25) and 400-meter dash (55.23). Jacob Pino placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.62) to cap off a busy weekend for the group.
Women's Recap
The 100-meter hurdles were nearly won by Smith, who placed fourth in the field of 16 student-athletes with a time of 16.00. Only Denison's Sydney Brown was faster among student-athletes in the second heat (15.94).
Volpe posted a mark of 11.10m in the shot put, which was the sixth-furthest mark in the field of 28 student-athletes. The first-year then performed even better in the discus, finishing third with a mark of 37.49m (123'), which set a new outdoor program record.
Janiya Robinson rounded out the biggest results of the day with a 13.780-second clip in the 100-meter dash. She finished seventh in the field and third among first-years.
What's Next
Both teams will travel to Alliance, OH for the Wuske Invite on Friday and Saturday this week.
