Thompson Earns All-NCAC Honors In Triple Jump To Finish NCAC Championships

Thompson, Relay Teams Post Big Performances To Cap Off 2-Day Event

GAMBIER, Ohio – February 24, 2024 – Jarvis Thompson earned All-NCAC honors in the triple jump to lead the Terriers track and field teams in their first conference championship meet since returning to Hiram College.

It's a big step for a pair of teams that have been competing hard throughout the winter season, with multiple school records and regional rankings being earned in such a short span.

Men's Recap

It was a historic day for Thompson, who broke his own program record in the triple jump and placed third in the field of 17 student-athletes with a mark of 13.41m (44 feet). He joined Oberlin's Namu Makatiani and Wooster's Nkosi Jeju as the all-conference winners in the event.

Then came the team of Dre Nelson, Alexander Viggiano, Jacob Mancini and Andrew Thompson in the 4x200-meter relay; the team finished ninth in the finals with its first experience on the big stage. Later on, the relay team of Ty Klepper, Mancini, Jacob Pino and Viggiano raced its way to a strong finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

Nathan Cooper finished off the team's contributions on Day 2 in the one-mile run, working his way to a time of 5:04.40.

Women's Recap

Kelsey Downs got the women's team started in the high jump, tying for 10th in the finals field of 14 student-athletes. Samantha Volpe and Chloe Cooper wrapped up the field events in the shot put, placing 10th (34 feet, 2 inches) and 11th (33 feet, 2 inches) respectively.

Hiram also found success in the relays, beginning with the team of Trezure Bates, Janiya Robinson, Downs and Sarah Douglas in the 4x200-meter relay (1:59.91). Then came the team of Bethany Smith, Bates, Makyndree Smith and Robinson in the 4x400-meter relay, which posted a time of 4:55.03.

Highlighting the distance events was Elaine Guyette in the 3,000-meter finals, as well as Kylie Moser and Victoria Freeman in the one-mile run.
