WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania – November 9, 2024 – The Hiram men's wrestling team placed 13
th at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational, as the team had multiple wrestlers pick up wins in the bracket-style event, highlighted by deep runs in the 149-lb bracket by
Jackson Bowers and 165-lb bracket by
Seth Holt.
Will Brodbeck (141 lbs) got the day started with a win by decision (13-7) over Alfred State's Cornelius Griffin. The junior also lost to Thiel by fall (1:15), but was officially earned his second win of the season on the day.
Bowers (149 lbs) was dominant in his bracket, beating Washington and Jefferson's Gunnar Hickman by fall (4:06) and Alfred State's Kyle Yasses by technical fall (15-0) to advance to the quarterfinals. He lost in that round to Penn State Behrend's Jake Brown by major decision (15-1), but went home with plenty to be proud of after earning PAC Newcomer Honor Roll this past week.
Holt (165 lbs) made it to the semifinals, beating Washington and Jefferson's Colin Freeney by fall (1:01) and Lycoming's Ryan Cooper by decision before losing to Thiel.
Kaelon Lawson-West was in that same bracket and picked up wins over UMBC (decision, 7-3)Â and Muskingum (decision (10-6) to place fifth, which was one spot behind Holt.
Jimmy Thomas (174 lbs) beat Gettysburg by major decision (16-3) before picking up two wins by fall and one win by major decision in the consolation bracket. The senior from Perry, Ohio finished 6
th in the 174-lb weight class.
Jaden Bell (197 lbs) wrapped up the day with a win by fall over Waynesburg (2:55) in the main bracket and a win by fall over Thiel (1:59) in the consolation bracket.
Hiram will return to the mats on Saturday, November 23, when they travel to Erie, PA for a tri-match with Penn State Behrend and Pitt-Bradford beginning at 5 p.m.
