HIRAM, Ohio – November 9, 2024 – The Hiram swimming teams made a statement on Saturday afternoon, with the men's team improving to a perfect 6-0 and the women's team nearly pulling off a win in a highly competitive dual meet against Wilmington inside Alumni Memorial Pool.
The men's final score was 134-114, which marked the program's first win over Wilmington over the last decade. Hiram has now won its last 13 non-conference meets dating back to last season, with the previous loss coming against Wilmington in October 2023.
Men's Recap
Owen Pastorius won the 1,500-meter freestyle in a highly entertaining distance race to open the individual events. Pastorius edged out Jo Pedersen (18:24.73 to 18:32.77), and later won the 400-meter freestyle (4:38.1) to give his team a chance for the win.
Jon Hybil was next to find the winner's circle, beating four other student-athletes and swimming his way to a time of 1:14.22 in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Luke Mackall did the same in the 200-meter butterfly (3:05.12), earning his team nine points in the process.
Once the meet reached its second half, Hiram started to pile up the points when it needed it the most.
Dayne Sauter won the 100-meter freestyle (57.58),
Joe Krosky won the 200-meter breaststroke and Pastorius added to his 400-meter freestyle win with a second-place finish in the 400-meter IM (5:28.96).
The late-meet surge was strong enough to give the team the win and beat another tough opponent at home.
Women's Recap
Similar to Pastorius, Brown did her job in the 1,500-meter freestyle, cruising her way to a first-place time of 22:10.20. The senior, who was making her final appearance at Alumni Memorial Pool, later placed second in the 400-meter freestyle (5:43.68).
In the sprint events,
Haven Papineau won the 50-meter freestyle (30.62) and
Madison Fleischer was right behind her (31.62) to earn a combined 13 team points. Fleischer later won the 100-meter freestyle (1:08.86) to earn the team its third individual victory of the day.
Papineau won again in the 200-meter backstroke (2:57.69) and Rebecca Johnston won the 200-meter backstroke (3:56.73), giving Hiram a strong finish to its home schedule for the 2024-25 campaign.

Both teams will take some time off before returning to the pool from Thursday, Nov. 21 to Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Malone Invitational in Canton, Ohio.
