MEADVILLE, Pennsylvania - October 5, 2024 - The Hiram swimming teams started the season with a number of strong results, as the men beat Allegheny (131-93) and the women lost to Allegheny (203-33) and Franciscan (175-57) on Saturday at Mellon Pool.
It marks the beginning of a 2024-25 season that comes with high expectations, as the Terriers are coming off their most combined wins in program history this past season (10 wins for the men and six wins for the women in 2023-24).
Men's Recap
Owen Pastorius was the first men's swimmer to place first in 2024-25, as he swam a 1:53.99 in the 200-yard freestyle. The junior from Pittsburgh would later win again in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.21) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.56) to earn a team-high three victories on the day.
Dayne Sauter got his season started on the right note, placing nearly one full second ahead of his competition in the 50-yard freestyle (23.45). Sauter also swam the last leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay with David Slovenkay, Ethan O'Malley and Jon Hybil, a team that cruised to first place with a mark of 1:34.03.
Slovenkay, who is now in his second season with the program, had a smooth start to his year with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (53.81) to cap off the winning performance.
Women's Recap
Haven Papineau found her form to begin the campaign in the 100-yard backstroke, placing just behind Allegheny's Katya Pryshchenko (1:05..88) with a time of 1:09.28. The sophomore would later place third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:32.14) as part of her big day in the individual events.
Madison Fleischer had a big collegiate debut in the pool, placing fourth in both the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.64) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:15.65). The first-year later joined Papineau, Grace Basham and Becca Johnston in the 200-yard freestyle relay, a team that placed third with a clip of 2:05.77.
What's Next
Both teams will host Chatham University next Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Alumni Memorial Pool in Hiram, Ohio. It will be Hiram's Breast Cancer Awareness Meet for this season.
