HIRAM, Ohio – The Hiram men's and women's swimming teams went head-to-head against Division II competition on Saturday, a big chance to gain some valuable experience with the conference championships now less than a month away.
The Terriers made the most of the opportunity.
The men's team won both of its meets against Malone (179-81) and Notre Dame College (164-90), while the women's team beat Malone (118-105) and fell to Notre Dame College (152-82).
For the men, the 7 wins in dual meets is their most in a single season since 2002-03, when the team won a program-record 10 times under former head coach Jack Groselle.
Men's Recap
Owen Pastorius was the first Hiram individual to place first, winning by 30 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:50.88).
Dayne Sauter would then win the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.99, which was closely followed by second-place finisher,
David Slovenkay (1:54.32).
Sauter wouldn't let his day end there; the junior beat Notre Dame's Luis Aguilar Delgado by 0.23 seconds to take down the 100-yard freestyle crown with a time of 49.37. A few events later,
Adam Johnson cruised his way to a strong win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.31).
Pastorius found his form again in the later events, winning the 500-yard freestyle by nearly eight seconds (5:14.54). Johnson followed up that performance and won the 200-yard IM (2:10.62).
To top it off, the team of Sauter, Slovenkay,
Jon Hybil and Pastorius won the 400-yard freestyle with a mark of 3:26.12.
Women's Recap
Moraine Jackson swam the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.47, which placed just behind her opponents from Notre Dame (2:08.17) and Malone (2:12.94).
Haven Papineau was also toward the front of the pack in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.87).
Elena Rinaldi, a Terrier of the Week and NCAC Athlete of the Week selection earlier this season, was just shy of the winning time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:40.54), but still scored her team points that helped it to victory over Malone. Jackson continued that momentum in the 50-yard freestyle (28.39).
In the 200-yard backstroke,
Asa Frush posted a strong time of 2:47.98 and Rinaldi nearly won the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.97) and 200-yard IM (2:43.17). The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Papineau, Jackson,
Natalie Brown and Rinaldi finished the day on a good note with a mark of 4:25.16.
