HIRAM, Ohio – February 7, 2023 – Conference championships for the Terriers swimming teams and men's wrestling team highlight a busy week for Hiram athletics.
"This Week's Lineup" will preview all Hiram sporting events for a particular week, including game notes, player stats and everything else you need to know about the Terriers programs.
Men's Volleyball – Tuesday at Penn State Altoona, 7 p.m. | Saturday vs Wells, 1 p.m.
The Terriers return to action with a pair of conference games this week after winning their AMCC opener last Tuesday against Mount Aloysius. Hiram is 1 of 3 teams in the AMCC without a loss in conference games this season (Penn State Behrend and Geneva).
Kyle Martini (64 kills) and Jackson Deubner (42 kills) have paced the offensive attack this season, with Matthew Albano (138 assists) setting them up. On the defensive end, Connor Tilton has a team-high 58 digs and Garrett Scheidegger leads the roster with 19 blocks.
Men's/Women's Swimming – Wednesday Through Saturday at NCAC Championships
The swimming teams will set their sights on the NCAC Championships this week, a 4-day event on the campus of Denison University. The men's team finished the regular season with a 6-4 record, its first winning record in dual meets dating back to the 2002-03 season (10-2) under former head coach Jack Groselle. The women's team posted a 5-7 mark, its most wins in a season since 2012-13 (7-8).
The men's team will have a chance at six potential school records, with sophomore
Dayne Sauter (sprint), freshman
Owen Pastorius (sprint/butterfly) and freshman
Jon Hybil (sprint/breaststroke) each hoping to stand out this week.
On the women's side,
Lilly MacDonald (breaststroke/sprint) and
Elena Rinaldi (butterfly/sprint) are among the many athletes on the team that will look to rank among the best in the conference.
Women's Basketball – Wednesday vs Oberlin, 6 p.m. | Saturday at Wooster, 1 p.m.
Hiram will look to carry its momentum from last week into another pair of conference games this week, including a home game against Oberlin on Wednesday. The Terriers had a big come-from-behind victory at Denison this past Wednesday after trailing by as many as 11 points in the game.
Sophomore
Brooke Hickman is coming off her 2
nd career NCAC Athlete of the Week award for her efforts last week. She scored 16 points in each of her two games during that span, which included a game-tying layup in the final minutes of the team's win against the Big Red.
Men's Basketball – Wednesday vs Wooster, 8 p.m. | Saturday at Wabash, 2 p.m.
The men's team will play its final home game of the season on Wednesday; the team has already guaranteed itself a winning record at home for the 2022-23 campaign (7-4 entering play). Another 2 wins would also guarantee the program a winning record in the regular season overall.
Senior
Brodgie Gordon has led the team in scoring in each of its last five games, including 19 points in its last win over DePauw on Jan. 28. Hiram leads the NCAC with 79.0 PPG.
Men's Wrestling – Sunday at AMCC Championships, 10 a.m.
The Hiram men's wrestling team finished the regular season with a 3-10 record in dual meets; it beat Penn State Behrend on Dec. 10 (35-14) and Jan. 7 (33-22) and took down Wilmington on Jan. 14 (50-5). Most recently this past Saturday,
Alex Savering (141 lbs) and
Devan Welch (285 lbs) both picked wins in a quad meet at home.
It continued a great stretch for Welch, who also won 1st place in the 285-lb bracket at the Jamestown Open on Jan. 29. The senior out of Mentor, Ohio was named AMCC Athlete of the Week for his efforts.
