ERIE, Pennsylvania - February 12, 2023 - The Hiram men's wrestling team finished 3rd out of 4 teams at the AMCC Championships at Penn State Behrend on Sunday.
Highlighting the day were 2nd-place finishes by Devan Welch in the 285-lb class, Seth Holt (165 lbs) and Alex Savering (141 lbs). Hiram finished with 56 points on the day, which was shy of Alfred State (136 points) and Pitt Bradford (66.5).
Ian Fuentes came in third place in the 125-lb bracket after losing by fall to Alfred State's Mason Drew (:52) and winning by forfeit in the consolation bracket.
Corey Casterline and Will Brodbeck followed in the 133-lb class; both wrestlers lost in the main bracket but Brodbeck would go on to win both of his matches in the consolation bracket to take down 3rd place. He beat Casterline (fall, 0:22) and Penn State Behrend's Mitch Headley (major decision, 9-0).
Savering beat Alfred State's Ben Lloyd by decision and lost to Alfred State's Sean Peterson by fall (2:49). Peterson was crowned champion at 141 lbs, with Savering right behind him.
Grayson Smith (149 lbs) worked hard in his bracket, falling just short of victory against Alfred State (fall, 1:20) and Pitt Bradford (fall, 2:16).
Kaelon Lawson-West (157 lbs) had a bounce-back effort, losing to Alfred State's Anthony Miraglia by fall (major decision, 10-2) before winning against Pitt Bradford (fall, :17) and Penn State Behrend (decision, 8-1). The sophomore finished in third place.
Holt picked up two victories in the main 165-lb bracket, beating Penn State Behrend's Matt Posego by fall (2:53) and Alfred State's Cale Bartosch by decision (7-6). He eventually lost in the championship match to Pitt Bradford's DJ Slovick (technical fall, 17-1).
Jimmy Thomas (174 lbs) lost to Alfred State (decision, 3-2) in a tough overtime match, moving him over to the consolation bracket. The sophomore responded well, rebounding in the consolation bracket with wins over Penn State Behrend's Brian Himes (technical fall, 18-2) and Pitt Bradford by forfeit.
Kwame Stewart would lose his two matches in the 184-lb class by fall (5:12) to Alfred State and by fall to Penn State Behrend (6:14). Zach Harper followed his teammate at 197 lbs, losing by fall (1:11) to Alfred State and by fall (1:49) to another wrestler on Alfred State.
Welch capped off the event with a win by decision (3-2) against Penn State Behrend's Kyle Trim and a win by decision (2-1) against Alfred State's Nicholas Barrett. Pitt Bradford's Cameron Carter-Green won the championship match against Welch by decision (10-3).
Hiram will next compete in the NCAA Central Regional at Case Western Reserve University beginning on Feb. 25.
