HIRAM, Ohio - October 21, 2023 - The Hiram men's swimming team improved to 3-0 with a 187-64 win over Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Memorial Pool. The women's team also competed hard and was on the cusp of victory, but fell just short in another matchup with the Tigers, 131-113.
Both teams have a winning record this season, with plenty more to look forward to between more conference meets, non-conference matchups and invitationals.
Men's Recap
The 200-meter medley relay team of Dayne Sauter, Jon Hybil, Landon Hughes and David Slovenkay got things rolling with a victory (1:57.57). Slovenkay returned to the pool shortly thereafter and took down the 200-meter freestyle (2:06.95).
The sprint events also proved to land in favor of Hiram, with Nathan Ratynski winning the 50-meter backstroke (31.98), Hybil winning the 50-meter breaststroke (33.45) and Sauter dominating the 50-meter freestyle (24.51). Sauter would then win the 100-meter freestyle (56.00) to give him a second individual victory.
Ratynski's experience kept the pressure on the opposition, as he edged past Wittenberg by just over one second to win the 100-meter backstroke (1:10.69). Hybil would then win the 100-meter breaststroke (1:14.54) before the freshmen jumped in the winner's circle:Henry Hupp in the 50-meter butterfly (30.39) ad Adam Johnson in the 200-meter IM (2:28.90).
The final relay race of the afternoon, the 200-meter freestyle relay, was won by the team of Sauter, Ethan O'Malley, Slovenkay and Hybil (1:43.93).
Women's Recap
The women started strong by winning the 200-meter medley relay; Asa Frush, Grace Basham, Madelyn Sagle and Natalie Brown posted a combined time of 2:47.66. The result earned the team an 11-point lead within minutes of the meet beginning.
Moraine Jackson would be the first individual winner for the Terriers, taking down the 50-meter freestyle by just under one second (31.33). Elena Rinaldi would then win the 50-meter butterfly (33.82) to keep it close.
Hiram battled hard in the relay races, but fell just short in the highly competitive dual meet.
What's Next
Both teams will travel to Wilmington, Ohio to take on Wilmington College on Saturday, November 4 at 1 p.m.
