JAMESTOWN, New York - January 29, 2023 - The Hiram men's wrestling team racked up a number of wins as part of the Jamestown Community College Open, including a 1st-place finish in the 285-lb bracket by Devan Welch.
Twelve different Terriers wrestlers were part of the action on Sunday.
Alex Savering highlighted the day in the 141-lb bracket, winning by decision against Alfred State (16-12), by decision against Ohio Wesleyan (10-4), by major decision against Niagara County Community College (17-6) and by decision against Gannon (15-12). He also lost to Cortland State by fall (4:06) and to Lake Erie College by fall (6:01).
Will Brodbeck (133 lbs) faced off against his teammate Corey Casterline (133 lbs), a match that ended in favor of Brodbeck by fall (4:54). Brodbeck eventually lost in the third round of the consolation bracket to St. John Fisher's Derek Bernardino by decision (11-5).
Kaelon Lawson-West (157 lbs) won his first match against Ithaca's Adrian Rosario-Beato by decision (4-3) before losing by decision to Cortland State (1-0) and by decision to Gannon (3-1). The sophomore scored 1.0 team points on the day.
Seth Holt (165 lbs) had a strong day, beating Penn State Behrend's Zane Anderson by fall (0:40) in the consolation bracket following a loss to St. John Fisher by decision (5-3). He also lost to Pitt Bradford's Dennis Slovick by fall (1:37).
Jimmy Thomas (174 lbs) bounced back from an early loss to Ithaca (fall, 1:14) by beating Mercyhurst's Ronnie Jones by decision (6-5) and Penn State Behrend's Brian Himes by fall (2:21). Thomas scored his team 3.5 points.
Kwame Stewart (174 lbs) picked up a win by sudden victory over St. John Fisher's Dylan Haubner (SV-1, 14-12). The senior fell short in his other two matches on the day.
Welch (285 lbs) wrapped up the event with a 1st-place finish in the heavyweight bracket; the senior beat Niagara Community College's Trevon Mathews by decision (3-2), Ohio Wesleyan's Joe Shoup by decision (8-2) and Pitt Bradford's Cameron Carter-Green by decision (7-2).
Hiram will next host Heidelberg, Case Western Reserve and Cornerstone on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. inside Fleming Fieldhouse in Hiram, Ohio.
